Ground Kontrol, Friday night, was an awesome venue. The way the festival was set up, a whole city block was cordoned off with different gigs and events going on, simultaneously, at several venues. But, I didn’t budge my tail feathers from GK, because that was ground zero for Johnny and his solo DJ gig. It was almost like getting a private concert, the way things turned out. There were a bunch of peeps in the back, enjoying the video games which were set to ‘free play’ for the entire night, the GK and festival staff, some folks/attendees from the animation festival, Johnny and his crew and then myself. Any other night, I would have been in nostalgia heaven and checked out some of the games on the main level and pinball machines, upstairs. But, again, not with Johnny in da house. LOL C45 was on his feet the entire time, both nights, and as long as he was spinnin’, grinnin’, pogoing, rockin’ out gangsta style and singing along to his favorite tunes, so was I… Must have danced, bopped and shook my tail feathers for at least 6-7 hours between Friday and Saturday night. LOL I went through a lot of bottles of H20 and diet Coke, I can tell ya. LOL Johnny was rockin’ his own conconction which I’ve affectionately nicknamed the “Colt Bolt.” ^^ You’d have to ask him about the contents… my beak is sealed. ;-) As most folks have figured out, Johnny is high-energy, on the go, all the time. He never stops or slows down–full speed all the way. And, apart from getting to see Johnny being himself, which was awesome, I enjoyed how much he LOVES the music and interacting with the crowd. He knows every tune, intimately, and has as much fun as anyone when he hears how everything comes together during a performance–every note, wave, beat and effect. I was in a good spot to see everything and had a great time experiencing Johnny work his magic for an INSANE 3 1/2 to 4 hours, not to mention all the time he and his crew put in, before that, during sound check and set up. He’s mashed up classic tunes and new music in often surprising and always delightful ways. Folks that frequent his .tv site and ’space would recognize some of the tunes as ones that he’s had up from different gigs and video clips. Must say, it is an honor I will cherish my whole life long to have been there for the first time Johnny went solo with his DJ gigs. He is a powerhouse and his energy, love of music and charisma/talent is infectious. When that boy spins, ya gotta move to da beat. No danger of anyone sitting while Johnny’s doing his thang. Also, Johnny’s buddy, the guy that invited Johnny out to spin at the festival, was at both events and Johnny showed him the entire setup and let him do a few effects during some of the tunes, which made the guy’s night, I could tell. LOL Johnny actually let several peeps come up close for a look at his DJ equipment, monitors and setup, during the night.

Kudos to the staff and owner at GK, too. I enjoyed hanging with all of them, prior to the gig–super nice folks, the lot of them. And Jim and Chris were awesome support for Johnny, all night long. Johnny did have his video recorder out and different folks were using it to film the action at GK. So, hopefully, some of that footage will turn out. (And, Kimmie and company will probably have some great photos from Saturday. :-) )
So, thanks for that incredible event, Johnny, and the deep honor of seeing you go solo with your tigerstyle. Booooom! Soooo much fun. Had a total blast. :-) And then there was Saturday night and the Closing Party, but that’s another story… ;-)
